Mayor’s debate.

This is what political debates should be.  A little bit of spirit, unpredictable questions, and the candidates questioning each other.

Unfortunately, it boils down to this: Fargo’s answers are unconvincing and her attitude toward Johnson is blatantly condescending.  Johnson’s answers are unrealistic. He is full of energy but overestimates the ability of the mayor to get things done.  The best question came from the student who mentioned the potential recall of Tretheway.  In a weak mayor system like ours, we need a strong set of council members. But when four seats are up for grabs and the incumbents attract no opposition, that won’t happen.

And what can a weak mayor do about public schools? Run for the Legislature maybe? How much influence does Fargo really have in the School District?  Callison’s question to Johnson hit the nail on the head. “Sacramento’s schools are independent of the City, why should the City administration get involved?”

I’ve made my decision, I think.  I’m not happy with it because I remain unhappy with Fargo and skeptical of Johnson, but it works for me now.
