Very interesting topic you've raised about the board not fully supporting RT. It's unfortunate the apparent lack of support offered in Sill's response. It's at least something they should feel the need to investigate....

At the time I wrote the email to the Regional Transit board, I suggested to The Sacramento Bee editorial board that it should join the effort to convince RT's board of its responsibility to promote transit. I included the then-new editor, Melanie Sill. This is the response I received:

Subject: RE: Proposed editorial campaign re transit
Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2008 14:50:25 -0800
From: "Sill, Melanie - Sacramento"
To: "Hughes, John - Sacramento"
Cc: "Terhaar, Joyce - Sacramento",
         "Saltzman, Mort - Sacramento",
         "Buchmann, Anna - Sacramento",
         "Holwerk, David - Sacramento"

John,

I tried to send a reply from my Blackberry but it bounced back.

I need to ask you to take down this post. It isn't appropriate for any member of The Bee news or editorial staffs to mount personal crusades on issues we cover. Nor is it appropriate for individuals to write letters to elected officials advocating on any issue. In and out of the office, we represent The Bee, and independence from any cause or faction is one of our prime values. In that regard, it also is inappropriate for you to write to the editorial board enlisting its advocacy on any issue.

I am copying this reply to Joyce, Mort and Anna. As soon as we can arrange it when everyone is back Tuesday, we will have the appropriate followup conversations.

Thanks,
Melanie

cc: Joyce, Mort, Anna, David

I've been waiting since I was laid off by The Bee for the opportunity to resurrect this topic. The meeting Monday provided it. It is still a topic worthy of The Sacramento Bee's editorial board and everyone else interested in transit.
