Getting back into it.
Tags: walkingToday, I did something I haven’t done since at least December, and probably November. I walked home from work. I’ve been taking light rail pretty consistently since late fall but have decided to get back into walking, now that the weather is really getting good.
My goal is to walk home from work 3 days a week, but it is quite a production. My new job requires business attire, and lugging home shoes, coat, pants, dress shirt, and tie isn’t easy. Suit coats don’t fold well into small packages.
And walking in them isn’t really an option either. In 2.5 miles, at my normal pace, I break a sweat pretty quickly. I’d be getting one wearing out of my dress shirts and would need to take my coats and pants to the cleaners much more frequently.

John,
Try the ‘bundle’ packing method, described here:
http://www.packinglight.net/plight/text_1.asp?tx_id=90&
The bundle packs all of your clothes into one neat little rectangle that fits nicely into a shoulder bag or backpack. The bundle packs clothes much more efficiently and greatly reduces wrinkles.
This is how wifey and I packed for Europe, which enabled us to fit three weeks of outfits into a single backpack each.

What about the half and half method? I have to wear office clothing as well and don’t like arriving feeling “damp” in my dress or blouse. I gave up my paid parking space at the office 2 years ago. I have no where to park, so I CAN’T drive. I half-and-half it. I walk to a bus stop a few blocks from my home, ride a bus for a few blocks (it’s only $1.10 in the downtown core) and walk a few blocks to my office. Granted, it’s no 2.5 mile walk, but I definitely add more steps to your day and save a ton on gas and parking.
