Bravo for this post! Definitely something most of us can do to feel better without nasty side effects. Thanks, John, for posting this.

The reason I love my neighborhood ( dtwn) is because a car is not a neccesity . I love to walk ( and sometimes i do carry my camera !)

Awhile ago , i tried convincing my GF to move to midtown -and extolled all the benefits since she worked downtown- of walking . A year later i have convertd her and the only driving we do is if its away from light rail .

kudos to the rare few who know !

Marnie -- I always found walking to be a good pause in the middle of the creative process. I like to get up from what I'm writing and go for a walk to reorder my thoughts. It's also true that, on days when I do walk to or from work, I'm a much better human being.

When I was playing starving artist and spending, walking was a key part of my writing process. I'd spend a couple days pretty much doing nothing but walking and telling myself whatever story I was worrying on over and over and then after enough time, I'd be ready to sit down and write.

For the first time in my life, walking is not a part of my commute and it's amazing how much my thought suffers for not having that time.

Yep, they could easily apply to biking. And I actually had "bring a camera" in an earlier draft. Not sure why I cut it.

All good ideas, which K and I have done more or less informally in all the neighborhoods in which we've lived.

I'd add:
Bring a camera (if your photographically inclined)
It is an excellent way to notice and think about the parts of your neighborhood you'd otherwise take for granted - strange light through trees, interesting lawn sculptures, birds, photogenic neighborhood cats...

Many of these could apply to biking as well. I am amazed at all of the things I see, hear, and smell while biking that would typically go unnoticed if I was in a car.
