Sacramentally ill city gets a Metblog

Tags:

I don’t know why I titled my post that, except that I was waiting at the Royal Oaks light rail station this evening when I overheard someone say “I’m a Sacramentan…I’m Sacramentally ill.”

It’s finally happened, Sacramento has a Metblog. From what I understand, that means that a critical mass of something like ten people said they’d be interested in doing a Metroblog in Sacramento. I was one of them. In fact, I may have been two of them, because I think I submitted my name twice, maybe two years ago.

But did they contact me to let me know that it had launched? Noooo. I had to find it on the Technorati Sacramento tag. Granted, I can’t commit to posting three times a week like they’re asking for (yet), but given that I had expressed an interest, a little notice would have been nice. It’s just good publicity.

And they’re already on top of things. A post from back on July 12th mentions the current “pedicab” debate, an issue that’s been heating up the SABA email list.

Of course, I’ve got a little bone to pick with the writer. He’s correct that pedicabs probably won’t do anything to reduce congestion or “improve transportation times.” But doing nothing won’t either. And the pedicab idea is more of a “cultural” idea than strictly a transportation one. But, if it expands the radius in which people are willing to park their cars and keep them parked, as opposed to driving four or five blocks to another parking space, I’m all for it.

Bonus: it will frustrate the hell out of drivers.
