Jason -- I agree. I've found Bicycle Chef to be very helpful and, even if the service is a little surly, College Cyclery has inexpensive and effective repairs. They treated my 20 year old Peugeot with the utmost respect, and started off assuming I could do the repairs myself (I'll do a lot of things, but rebuilding the bottom bracket isn't one of them).

I don't have anything against Mike's specifically, but I have to say that there are other local shops that are really helpful and flexible about working with people who can do part of the job on their own. Also, these local shops have a track record of getting involved in the community via SABA or projects like the Quinn Cottages Bike Coral (Bicycle Chef) which is a bike loaner program for low income people. Just want to plug our locally owned shops!

Haven't been to Mike's yet, but hope to get around there one of these days. I only work six blocks away. How hard could it be? As for motivation to ride, I find it best to get up early and do it before the sun can melt my tires.

Sweet! I'm going to have to check that out.

Have you been into Mike's Bikes (http://www.mikesbikes.com) yet? They're another new bike shop in the area that's sort of a half step in the direction of bicycle kitchen but still based on a profit-based business plan.

Lord knows I could use a couple tips on fixing my bike... and some motivation to ride now that it's 100 in the shade, and my commute has moved from near the Del Paso area to West Sacramento. :(
