I still like the ultr-decadent "Thai Iced Coffee at Naked Coffee.

The best in theGreater Sacramento area imo has to be Mishka's on 2cd in Davis. Worth the drive from Vacaville sometimes

Rachel - Coffee Garden (or whatever it's called) on Franklin at 4th Avenue serves Coffee Works coffee. It's a pretty pleasant space and I find myself there off and on.

Ron (sorry about the delay - your comment got misidentified as spam), as a decaf drinker, I hate the attitude. I personally enojoy the flavor of coffee and once upon a time had a fairly sophisticated palate for it. Over time though, I've gone through periods where I drank herculean amounts for the caffeine which destroyed my ability to discern subtle differences between Indonesian and Latin American coffees as well as my ability to tolerate caffeine in anything more than small doses.

If I have just one cup of regular, I need to keep drinking regular or I get a caffeine headache as bad as any I got when I went cold turkey from eight-plus to zero cups a day.

Frankly, I usually tell people it screws with my blood pressure (which is true), but I've had worse medical issues thanks to caffeine and I can always trot those out if the attitude gets too bad. ;)

I know Starbucks is, in theory, evil, but I can't help but like it. It's very strong. I also like Peet's although I do think it has that slightly burnt taste...but again, it's strong. As for local places I think the only other place that even comes close to making good, strong coffee is Coffeeworks. I used to go there all the time when I lived in East Sac. Now, I need to find a good Land Park / Hollywood Park alternative. Every now and then I'll go that one place at 16th & Broadway...I should probably go there more...

Coffee is one of those personal preference things that you just have to accept about people, you know? Even on a micro level; do you take it with cream and sugar? If so, are you a poser? Do you go the half caf route? If so, don't come around here no more. That sort of thing.

I'm a Peet's fan through and through and I've even received a little attitude while ordering a large decaf in the late morning hour.

<blockquote>Decaf? Why bother?</blockquote>

I dunno, I don't think Peets has that kind of syrupy vaguely sweet taste that burnt coffee has (having burned a lot of it myself...).

Starbucks has well worn out its welcome with me but in terms of number of stores per square mile, Peet's isn't far behind Starbucks in my east bay neighborhood. I've also decided once and for all that Peet's coffee doesn't taste "good and strong"; it tastes positively burnt. But Peet's employees are usually far more informed and seem way more immersed in what they do than their Starbucks counterparts.

One thing about Starbucks, however:When you're driving the lonesome 99, passing through Lodi, Tracy, Modesto, Merced, Fresno et al, Starbucks is a mighty fine sight for the eyes in this otherwise bleak landscape.

I'm a Peets fan myself, although they aren't local. I think La Bou's coffee is weak (even though I drink it quite a bit) and I haven't had Java City in a long time. Temple's is very good -- I can't remember who they buy from, as is Coffee Works.

Starbuck's quality depends a lot on what they're brewing. They roast everything--except espresso/French/Italian, of course--at full city, which I think is too dark for some beans like Guatemalan or Sumatran.

As for Ikea, I can't stand driving to Emeryville. I'll wait for the crowds to settle down here, especially since I'm not in need of anything and I'm very unlikely to "impulse buy" furniture. It could happen, but it isn't likely.

Couldn't pass up a chance to comment on Sacramento's coffee scene. Sorry I have to disagree with you about Starbucks--I think their coffee sucks. Best coffee in town IMHO is Boulevard Coffee Co., 7901 Fair Oaks Blvd (near California Ave). <a href="http://www.labou.com/about-labouwithlocation.htm" rel="nofollow">La Bou</a> and Java City would be my 2nd and 3rd votes.

I am excited about the new IKEA, but I probably won't go there for a year or so, when the excitement (hopefully) dies down. For now, Emeryville seems like the easier route, even if it is longer.
