An Out of Office Experience - Sacramento Style

Tags:

I have been at my current job just over two years and today, for the first time, I drove myself to work. I had a meeting out-of-office this afternoon (in Sacramento - usually “out of office” means I’ve been sent to the Bay, and Amtrak is good for that) and Sacramento public transit being what it is, I pretty much had to drive.

I’d gotten rides into or away from work a few times, but today was the first time I’d had to deal with parking and traffic as a commuter. Verily, it was not good.

First, since I don’t pay by the month, didn’t get in to work until 9:30am, and didn’t feel like moving my car every hour, I ended up paying a total of $17.00 to park downtown. It could have been worse.

Second, I’m happy to report that L Street at quittin’ time remains as congested as ever, yet miraculously not more so. It really hasn’t changed much since I learned to drive in the mid 1980s.

Third, Sacramento drivers still don’t understand the concept of turn signals. Here’s a hint: use them. Here’s another one: when you use them, deploy them before you start your maneuver.

Finally, since I was heading elsewhere rather than straight home, I got to experience getting on the highway, er, Interstate Parkinglot. Actually, I-5 wasn’t that bad. When I was a road warrior in Oregon, I’d been stuck in much worse. Like snow flurries and an icy surface with heavy traffic.

On the upside, I got to listen to some fine classical music and brainstormed a new featurette for the website (see next post).
