Redhook Winterhook, 2005

Redhook WinterhookRedhook Brewery’s Winterhook is a reddish brown beer with little carbonation and thus very little head. It has a distinctive but slight fruity smell.

This is a very mellow beer that is not bitter at all. It has an almost dry wine quality in the mouth and goes down smooth with no aftertaste. In fact, there is little, unfortunately, to recommend this beer except that it will appeal to those who do not like darker or stronger beers, or those who would prefer a beer lower in alcohol (5.5%) and lacking bitterness. The Winterhook’s color would suggest that it should be a stronger beer. Instead it is weak. “Drinkable,” the website calls it.

Drink with shellfish or pizza. If you’re serving beer with your holiday meal, choose something different.
