Brian, thanks for the comment. It’s funny you should say “Beige Hills” because I was just reading something this morning referring to beige as the official color of the ‘burbs.

I would throw in that it’s yet another example of more “instant placemaking”-under one ownership, with one designer, one concept, and the same narrow spectrum of national chain retailers. A perfect place for the residents of “Beige Hills, a Gated Equestrian Community”

You’re right, Amanda. I think by “public space” they’re thinking about the big swaths of paved area bordering the park, for example. “Public” here just means a place for people to mingle about – it is still privately controlled. I’m not even sure about the greenbelt. Would it be publicly owned? I don’t recall the article saying anything about it.

Where is the public space? All of the open space except the greenbelt is privately owned and thus controlled. Malls and commercial development is not a replaced to a true civic space.
