Gold Rush Park

Tags:

In an earlier post on condo living in Sacramento, Maya mentioned, and Sugit linked to, a proposal to create “Gold Rush Park,” basically a huge adjunct to Discovery Park in the Richards Boulevard area.

Putting aside for a moment the fact that buisnesses may object heartily (and my mother would lose one of her favorite restaurants, the not-quite venerable Rusty Duck), in a SimCity 4.0 perfect world, the idea might have some merit, especially when the Rail Yard developments get built. The proposal calls for a kind of mega-entertainment complex with a sports arena and/or new zoo, and/or performing arts center, you name it. Furthermore, its proximity to downtown might help the downtown revitalization, and its tie-in to Old Sac would be a natural for moving flocks of tourists back and forth.

Update:
Oooo. It could work to make the Jazz Festival even bigger!

Still and all, despite the “it could happen” rhetoric of the website, the idea is pretty pie-in-the-sky.

And all of this leads me to recall a question I’ve had for a very long time (since the late 80s, really). Is Discovery Park really being utilized to its fullest? Is there anything the city can do to improve the profile and usability of this groovy park in an excellent location? What can we do to fix what we already have?
