It’s Getting Drafty

Tags:

The Daily Kos posts about how the military is falling significantly short of its recruitment goals – goals it has to meet in order to keep a fresh supply of rested and ready troops to send to the world’s hot spots.

Kos postulates that the Army’s continuing inability to find people to volunteer to be shot at will lead to a draft. I think this Administration will do everything it can to avoid a general draft, but some time ago there was talk of a “special skills draft” in order to increase the number of soldiers with needed skills such as computer security or Arabic language proficiency.

I think a “special skills draft” is far more likely, and these are the skills I expect the military will be looking for:

  • People who can speak Iraqi Arabic
  • People who know about network security
  • People who can keep secrets
  • People who can fix flying things
  • People who can fix driving things
  • People who can build things
  • People who can be moving targets
  • People who can be stationary targets
  • People who can see and/or hear
  • People who speak any dialect of Ebonics

However, people who love people of the same gender will not be needed during this time of crisis.
