Uneasy Rhetoric

Isn’t that funny? A few days ago, in response to Kerry’s “Misery Index,” the Republicans released their Index De Le Miserables. Given my last post, I couldn’t let that one pass.

First, “Miserables” is a plural noun, therefore, the article “le” should be “les.” Second, in French “de” and “les” contract to “des.” And, just to be nitpicky, there’s an accent in “Misérables.” Index Des Misérables.

The GOP doesn’t have anyone on staff who knows enough French to make the correction? Did a GOP news person who knew he or she didn’t speak French, nevertheless feel compelled to assume he or she was correct?

At the very least, they should have gotten the “les,” because the stage production’s name is “Les Misérables.”

I wonder how the GOP can expect us to take their response to Kerry seriously when they blatantly demonstrate their unwillingness to check their facts. This was in an official news release, not some staffer’s blog.

I guess we really know how much stock the “Grand Old Party” places in being a citizen of the world.
