Uneasy Rhetoric

My friend Rob had a very good letter to the editor on gay marriage published in Salon. Scroll about halfway down the page. It starts “Having lived in the Netherlands for the past two years…”

He gets right to the point of the matter:

“The right wing and its minions have defined our debates for far too long. Now it is the progressives that are defining this issue.”

Instead of complaining about Newsom’s (and Diane Linn’s and all the other local officials who have come forward to support gay marriage) decision to do this in a vitally important election year, maybe we should congratulate him for showing that, in fact, progressive Democrats really do have backbones.
